I.21 SCHOOL GROUND MAINTENANCE
Policy:
Red River Valley School Division Board of Trustees expects that grounds will be maintained consistently to an acceptable level throughout the Division, weather permitting.
Protocol:
The Transportation and Maintenance Department will administer, monitor and make recommendations for change for snow removal, grass cutting, weed control, dust control, litter, drainage and maintenance of all structures placed on the grounds area separate from the school building for all property owned by Red River Valley School Division.
Procedure:
Snow Removal:
Snow removal service will be provided for driveways, parking lots and access to all emergency exits. Sanding and salting for vehicle traffic will only be provided at the discretion of the department.
Grass Cutting:
Grass-cutting services will be provided on school Division property. Mowing will be done on playgrounds and other areas adjacent to the school. Mowing may be provided in ditches, dykes or shelterbelt areas as required. While mowing and trimming schedules are subject to weather, every effort shall be made to maintain a rotational schedule to ensure the grass is at a level acceptable for student activities on the grounds at all schools.
Outside users of the grounds may submit schedules of activities or special events to the Transportation and Maintenance Department. Upon receipt of the information, mowing schedules may be adjusted to accommodate mowing of the affected property (timely to those events).
Weed Control:
Weeds will be controlled on school grounds. Areas controlled will be those accessible by the equipment used. In consultation with the Weed Controller, time schedules and extent of coverage will be developed by the Transportation and Maintenance Department. Every effort shall be made for the use of chemicals to take place when students are not in school.
Dust Control:
Dust control will be provided only to those facilities immediately serviced via gravel access.
Drainage:
Drainage will be provided for the long-term maintenance of properties. The Department will assess all drainage needs and will implement the required action under normal rainfall conditions. Areas experiencing regular flooding causing damage to grounds will be repaired first.
Maintenance of Structures:
All structures on the school grounds will be maintained to acceptable safety standards as required by the authority having jurisdiction over such standards. Structures deemed non-repairable or that are no longer required shall be removed.
Gravel Areas:
Gravel areas for driveways, parking, fire lanes and those areas built by or in conjunction with the Division will be maintained.
Litter:
Litter receptacles will be provided for school grounds where required. The maintenance and regular disposal of said receptacles shall be the school custodian’s responsibility.
Other:
Those procedures, practices or duties not listed above shall be the responsibility of each site. Storage sheds will be considered an extension of the school building, and are therefore not covered under this policy.
